About this Item

In the early 19th century, botany was regarded as the only science suitable for study by women and girls, Lindley felt that there was a lack of books for 'those who would become acquainted with Botany as an amusement and a relaxation', and attempted to meet this need. The first volume, in the form of engaging letters to a lady, was originally intended to stand alone. Illustrated with detailed botanical drawings, it schools the student in botanical form and taxonomy as well as nomenclature Light shelf wear, a darkened 2" portion of the lower spine cover. There is light and minor scattered foxing in the text, but the plates are clean and bright. They were done on heavy rag papers. There is a former owner's inscription and signature on the blank, front end-paper of Volume II, dated 14 Oct. 1850. 50 hand coloured plates (25 in each volume), including a frontispiece in Vol. II, by Sarah Ann Drake, one of the most gifted botanical artists of the 19th century. Pages; Vol. I, 300; Vol. II, 280. Hardbound in quarter brown leather over patterned paper-covered board. Four raised spine bands with gilt-stamped title in the comartments. Fore and bottom edges are deckled. Top edges are gilt. These are obviously a later binding as the books were published at different times. Vol. I, fourth edition and Vol. II, third edition.
