About this Item
(cardstock covers) [minor handling wear only, with a tiny smudge near the top of the front cover]. (B&W photographs, maps, line drawings) Collected memories and reminiscences of local history and culture by members of the Kohala community, on the northwestern tip of Hawaii's Big Island. As explained in the Preface, it was a collaborative effort by about one hundred individuals (mostly longtime residents of the area), as part of their participation in a class entitled "Kohala: Past and Present," itself organized under the aegis of a program called Project Learn - Kohala, "supported in part by the U.S. Office of Education, Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, under Title I of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, and the Hawaii State Postsecondary Education Committee." The two dozen or so individual contributions are grouped under the following headings: Sugar in Kohala; Kohala's Stores, Churches and Schools; Foods of Kohala; Some Special Places in Kohala; Hulas, Chants and Legends; The People and Community of Kohala. Originally published in 1977, this edition is a 1999 reprint sponsored by the Kohala Library Fund. Seller Inventory # 28418
