A pocket-sized edition of 500 quotations from the 'minor works' of medieval devotional author Thomas a Kempis, collected by German Reformed religious writer Gerhard Tersteegen (1697-1769) for the edification of young people, together with several other Tersteegen works, published by a reformed Christian printer in Reutlingen, a city in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. In addition to The Little Kempis - which was quite popular and was issued in dozens of editions - Tersteegen's writings include a collection of hymns (Das geistliche Blumengartlein / The spiritual flower-garden], 1729), a volume of Gebete (prayers), and another of Briefe (letters), as well as translations of the writings of the French mystics and of Julian of Norwich. Thomas a Kempis (circa 1380-1471) was an Augustinian monk, priest, copyist and scholar, and the author of 'The Imitation of Christ,' one of the best known Christian devotional works, among many other published writings. He spent most of his long life at Mount Saint Agnes monastery, in the town of Windesheim, located in what is now the Netherlands. He wrote these works for the instruction of novices of his Augustinian monastic order, followers of Geert Groote's Brethren of the Common Life, but over the years they became popular among the faithful worldwide.
