About this Item

These are the memoirs of Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, who established the first Catholic church in the Sonoran desert, and who explored and documented 50,000 square miles of what is now southern Arizona and northern Sonora, Mexico, during the course of which he interacted with sixteen different Native American tribes. Father Kino was a true renaissance man who led explorations, was expert in astronomy, cartography, and mathematics, and authored a number of books. He was also a powerful advocate for the interests of the Native Americans of the region and an opponent of slavery and forced labor. This is the first printing of the University of California edition, which was published in 1948, two volumes in one. Condition is Very Good-Near Fine. There are a few underlines and brackets in the first 70 or so pages, but they are in pencil and can probably be erased. The pull-out map in back is still intact. Covers and spine and spotless except for a little band of light soiling near the top of the spine. All corners are sharp and there is just a hint of rub wear to the lower edges. There is also a little dust soiling to the top of the book on the outer page edges. The dust jacket is very worn and has torn in to several pieces but it will be included. An important work of California and Catholic history. Will be bubble-wrapped and shipped in a box. Bookseller Inventory # ABH469
