About this Item

Copyright 1946. Inscription front-end page, dated June 1948. No dust jacket. Cloth cover has light discoloration, no edge wear. The Maroons are a small and rapidly dwindling group, most of whom live in one small village in the mountains of Accompong in the northeastern part of Jamaica. They began as a group of 1500 Slaves from the African West Coast who escaped into the mountains and had never been reduced to a servile state. The present-day Maroons are a peaceable agricultural people who speak a dialect of English, and have many old African customs. While Miss Dunham's observation is that of a trained anthropologist, her dark skin and her response to the African rhythms enabled her to achieve a closer liaison and deeper understanding of these people and which laid the foundations for the choreography which made her an outstanding figure in the entertainment world. This book is a recording of the life of these little-known and fast-disappearing people and it is also a colorful account of a romantic pilgrimage. Bookseller Inventory # 21709
