The editor was Carl Richard Unger (1817-1897). He became a fellow at the University of Christiania in 1841, and first went to Copenhagen to study ancient manuscripts. He discovered that the printed versions were frequently inaccurate with ambiguous word forms and uncertain textual readings. During 1843-1845, he worked in Paris and London to study the repositories in major collections of Old Norse-Icelandic texts in manuscript. In 1841, Unger started working on an Old Norse (and ancient Icelandic ) Dictionary , but when he learned that Johan Fritzner had come a long way with a similar project, Unger turned over his material and data. However, when Fritzner abandoned his work after page 384 in the third volume of: "Ordbog over det Gamle Norske Sprog 1-3" (1886-1896), Professor Unger took the project over and saw it to completion. His students presented him with a festschrift in 1897 -- ['Sproglig-historiske tilegnede Studies Professor CR Unger']. Unfortunately, in that same year, Unger retired in the Spring, turned 80 in the summer, and died on November 30. This 1860 work on the Emperor Charlemange (742-814) is scarce in commerce.
