A rare 1907 limited edition English translation of the work first published in Paris in 1797. Two volumes, measuring 9" x 6", handsomely bound by Ramage in polished half leather (green faded to brown on spine) over marbled paper with matching marbled endpapers. 5 raised bands to spine, top edges gilt, gilt ruled lines to front and back covers. Attractive owner's bookplate of Sir Charles Bine Renshaw, Bart , Barochan,(1848-1918) adhered to each pastedown. Vol 1: Half title, limitation details of the impression : 450 copies, frontispiece with tissue guard - portrait of the author, title page, 3pp preface by Arch. Geikie dated 30th March 1907, contents : 13 chapters - 373pp incl. postscript & index, details of 3 plates: apart from the frontis, volume 1 has two further plates - Geode of clay ironstone, sea-loveage and inside the cottage of McNab, a Highland blacksmith at Dalmally; 18pp Memoir of the Author. Vol 2: Half title, limitation details of the impression : 450 copies, frontispiece with tissue guard - View of the Cave of Fingal in the Isle of Staffa, title page, contents : 21 chapters, details of 4 plates: apart from the frontis, volume 2 has three further plates - View of the Isle of Staffa, view of the basaltic island of Boo-Sha-La, standing stones between Kirkcaldy and Kinghorn. 1 page postscript and 10-page index. All plates in the two volumes are fine b&w photographic reproductions by Mr Annan of Glasgow of the plates in the original French edition. Condition - varies between very good plus to near fine, with many clean pages and others with light foxing. All plates and tissue guards are unmarked. No inscriptions. Binding is very tight indeed and, despite the fading to the leather, the set presents very well indeed. The author's truly fascinating account of life, lore and topography in England and Scotland at the end of the eighteenth century as seen through the eyes of a Frenchman on his travels during the troubled times of the French Revolution.
