About this Item
29 x 37 cm b&w political cartoon on card. Stain at bottom front, creased bottom corner, some thumbing and spots. Pencil inscriptions at top and bottom. Bottom inscription: "Jim Conmee: The Minnie M., huh! She aint in our class." Another scribbled out pencil cartoon on rear. Newton McConnell (1877-1940) worked for the Daily News for 26 years, 15 as editorial cartoonist. He was one of the most prominent and popular cartoonists of his period and one of the first to be syndicated on a regular basis in Britain and the U.S. as well as Canada. He was also one of the first cartoonists to use a trade mark a small dog named "Spot" - often as part of the cartoon; here "Spot" appears in the bottom right corner. James Conmee (1848 1913) was an Ontario businessman and political figure who lacked grammatical skills and was often mocked for his uneducated speech. One of the figures in the scribbled out cartoon on rear appears to be of Conmee's friend Wilfrid Laurier. Seller Inventory # 142432
