About this title

Synopsis:

Jerome Kern: A Biography
182 pp. First edition. Includes black and white photographs. "Jerome David Kern (January 27, 1885 ? November 11, 1945) was an American composer of popular music. He wrote around 700 songs, including such classics as "Ol' Man River", "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man", "A Fine Romance", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", "All the Things You Are", "The Way You Look Tonight", "Long Ago (and Far Away)" and "Who?", a 6-week number 1 hit for George Olsen & his Orchestra in 1925. His career spanned dozens of Broadway musicals and Hollywood films from 1902 until his death. Although Kern wrote almost exclusively for musical theatre and musical film, the harmonic richness of his compositions lends them well to the jazz idiom (which typically emphasizes improvisation based on a harmonic structure) and many Kern melodies have been adopted by jazz musicians to become standard tunes."Keywords: MUSIC JAZZ BIOGRAPHY ENTERTAINMENT JEROME KERN FIRST EDITION

From Publishers Weekly:

Contrary to Tin Pan Alley legend, Kern was not the son of poor immigrant parents; his folks were solidly upper-middle and keen racing fans. This bio of the composer of "Showboat" and "Irene" is thoroughgoing and highly readable, if marred here and there by such cliches as "life was not all bliss." We go from his career as song-plugger, to his career as songwriter and composer of full-length book musicals that were advanced for their day. Unlike the '40s bio Till the Clouds Roll By, this book stresses Kern's sometimes cunning cleverness, his outsized ambitions and his "vindictiveness." (Wife Eva would sit at home while Jerry attended all-night parties; the songwriter was also fond of the gaming tables.) Recommended for diehard show-biz fans and pop-culture cravers.
