Book Description 1st ed., 1942. 64, lvi + 529 pp., profusely illustrated with photographs & line drawings. Blue cloth; gilt; 21 x 32cm. Surface of cloth a little damp cockled but o/w a clean & sound copy : V.G. One of the interesting and important wartime editions of Jane’s great work, this book contains a wealth of detailed information on the ships then engaged in hostilities. Delayed owing to wartime problems, this edition exceeds the amount of material found in previous wartime editions and brings up to date Allied and Enemy Losses. The frontispiece shows a fine view of the battleship DUKE OF YORK and among the hundreds of other photographs there is a unique view of HMS NELSON taken after she survived a torpedo attack in the Mediterranean. With reference to the German Navy the Editor remarks that it " appears to have done little or nothing to replace its losses in capital ships and cruisers. Photographs of the TIRPITZ and PRINZ EUGEN have been added, besides one of the ill-fated BISMARCK." As a work of reference Jane’s is without equal and remains the definitive study of the world’s warships. ONE OF THE IMPORTANT WARTIME EDITIONS OF JANE’S FIGHTING SHIPS BEING THE 1941 ISSUE. Book Description 1st.ed., 44th year of issue, 1941. 48 + xxxiv 528 pp. Profusely illustrated with photographs, line drawings, insignia, flags, drawings, plans, etc. Blue cloth ; gold lettering to spine ; blind to front board. 34 x 22cm. Repair at hinge between advert. pp 7 & 8 o/w V.G. Circumstances arising out of the war, including enemy bombing of the publisher's premises in London, caused delay in the publication of this early wartime edition of Jane's Fighting Ships scheduled to appear in 1940. Includes the first 'War Loss' section of World War II. Information regarding the German Navy was scant and although many U-boats had been destroyed, no official figure was available but American sources estimated that 300 U-boats were under construction. It was treated with caution that BISMARCK and TIRPITZ were in full commission, but as we now know this was shortly to be the case with regards the former battleship which would be sunk in the near future taking HMS HOOD with her. British war losses to date included ROYAL OAK (already credited with having been sunk by a U-boat), GLORIOUS, COURAGEOUS, SOUTHAMPTON, EFFINGHAM, CALYPSO, CURLEW, plus destroyers, minesweepers, etc. Eleven AMCs had also been lost including RAWALPINDI and JERVIS BAY. Japan and America had not yet entered the war and their respective fleets were still intact. The book provides a wealth of information on the warships of all nations and the book is profusely illustrated with photographs & drawings. Bookseller Inventory # C143B096
