This biographical study is based on several interviews with Van DerZee and features many of his photographs of Harlem social life from the 20s on into the 70s. Van DerZee began his life as a visual artist in 1920s Harlem photographing family gatherings, weddings, communions, graduations and ceremonies then he came into his own documenting Harlem's social and athletic clubs, its churches and the famous figures of the Harlem Renaissance.
