408pp ISBN 0810931788 February 22, 1991, was the opening day of "Jewels of Fantasy--Fashion Jewellry of the Twentieth Century" at the Museo Teatrale alla Scala in Milan. It was the world's first comprehensive traveling exhibition of important European and American costume jewelry of the twentieth century. There were approximately 610 pieces of extraordinary costume jewelry on loan from museums, public institutions, and private collectors, including Gianni Versace, Christian Lacroix, and leading dealers from Europe and the United States. Chanel, Schiaparelli, Dior, Trifari, Coro, Eisenberg, Kenneth Jay Lane, Miriam Haskell, Marcel Boucher, and other important designers were represented, tracing the impact of social, economic, and historical influences on their designs. What was most interesting to collectors and admirers of costume jewelry was that this exhibition and corresponding book legitimized nonprecious jewelry as an art form worthy of worldwide recognition. Cited; "JEWELS OF FANTASY is unquestionably the most important of all reference books on costume jewelry," and; thus, an IMPORTANT COSTUME JEWELRY REFERENCE BOOK for your library. very good+ w/very good+ dustjacket (hardcover).
