The Royal Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1927 under the auspices of Faisal I, by Sir Harry Chapman Sinderson (1891-1974), doctor to the Iraqi royal family (1923-46), and its first Dean (1927-34, 1941-46). Sinderson is here named on the Board, but at the time this was published, the Dean was Saib Shawkat (1898-1984). Professor Shawkat was the first Iraqi doctor to teach anatomy at the Royal College, pioneered general surgery in Iraq, served as Director General of the Baghdad Hospital in the 1930s, and was a founding committee member of the Iraqi Red Crescent Society in 1932. He had recently attended King Ghazi after the car accident that led to his death (Apr 1939). This document contains information about the College Office, Faculty Council, Board, Regulations (1939), terms and holidays, summary programme of studies, and detailed course descriptions (for physics, zoology, botany, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, pathology, bacteriology, pharmacology, forensics, public health, surgery, medicine, midwifery and diseases of women, mental diseases, diseases of children, diseases of the eye, ENT, the skin, VD, radiology). The portraits are of Kings Faisal I, Ghazi, and Faisal II. Photos show the interiors of labs, classrooms, lecture hall, the Museum of Life Sciences, together wide side view of the College and gardens, and aerial view of the Royal Hospital in Baghdad.
