About this Item
Illustrated. 219 pages. This is the second edition of Cunningham's 1899 book titled: Inverkeithing, North Queensferry, Limekilns, Charlestown, The Ferry Hills - Their Antiquities and Recreative Resources - History of Dunfermline Golf Club and Plan of Course. The author states two reasons for the second edition: the first edition sold out, and historical features of the Naval Base needed recording. The section on the history of the Dunfermline Golf Club founded in 1887 has been altered and somewhat abbreviated in this second edition. After two years on the Halbeath-Crossgates course, "links which are all hazards," the club secured a lease on the Ferry Hills and set up another course. The club's present course can boast of the oldest building converted to a clubhouse, a 600-year-old baronial home, an edifice one from the USA might call a castle. Two Dunfermline men are credited for helping to establish golf in America: Robert Lockhart who purchased golf clubs from Old Tom Morris and sent them to schoolmate John Reid in New York. Reid subsequently founded St. Andrew's Golf Club, Lockhart being the first person proposed as a member at the first meeting on November 14, 1888. Bound in original gray-green cloth with gilt lettering and author's signature on cover. Cloth with wear head and tail of spine and along spine edges. Former owner name on front pastedown, eps with pastedown offset, ffep upper corner replaced, rear hinge reglued. Contents clean and bright. Covers protected in mylar Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
