About this Item

Illustrated with more than 70 black & white plates. Publisher's maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt, t.e.g., other edges rough trimmed, no d/ws. Spines a little sunned, but overall a near fine set. Written by Richard Barham, under the pseudonym of Thomas Ingoldsby, the Ingoldsby Legends were first published in "Bentley's Miscellany" in 1837, and later collected in book form in 1840. These comic and grotesque metrical tales, written in a medieval style, were immensely popular in their time and have been reprinted in many different editions, of which the present is one of the most profusely illustrated and complete.
