16th century. Engraving on laid paper. Misfortune, a winged whole-length female figure is stepping to right, a demon at left, a crayfish at right; a rock in the right distance. Inscription at the top "Infortunium. Das Unglück". 7,8 x 5,0 cm.*Pauli No. 144b.II (of 2). Bartsch VIII, 170, No. 141. Copy in reverse, by an anonymous artist, of an allegorical engraving of c. 1541 by the German printmaker and painter Hans Sebald Beham. He is known as one of the so-called "Kleinmeister/Little Masters" from the small scale of his engravings. Misfortune is not so often represented in art as her positive counterpart Fortune. - Trimmed to border line, at middle left just within border line. Paper somewhat browned.[(5967)].
