About this Item
A vintage photographic study of the design and art work installed at the famous and historic Hotel Okura in Tokyo, Japan that has its roots in indigenous designs of traditional Japanese art. The hotel opened in 1962 and was known for its design showcasing the "artistic genius" of Japan, modern yet referencing the traditional crafts, colors and shapes of traditional Japanese arts. This contemporaneous volume from 1964 is profusely illustrated throughout with both vintage b/w and color photographs highlighting the patterns seen in the art used in the hotel juxtaposed with the traditional indigenous Japanese artwork that originally inspired it. Patterns from nature and indigenous architecture, etc. Fold-out copy of a watercolor of the hotel's gardens with Mt. Fuji in the distance. All texts and captions in English and Japanese. Measures 9" x 11.75" with 103+ pages. Nicely designed volume with bright red endpapers and a cloth cover, a bit faded along the edges and the spine. Contents in pristine condition. Comes with a business card from the hotel with this caption: "With compliments Hotel Okura Tokyo". The hotel is currently undergoing a transformation with its original building being demolished and this important volume preserves the way it used to be when it opened. Additional shipping charges will be required for all deliveries outside the United States. Seller Inventory # E4497
