Synopsis: Includes registers of students, staff, teachers, Indian chiefs and visitors of the school.
From the Inside Flap: The Carlisle Indian Industrial School was founded in 1879 by Captain Richard H. Pratt. Carlisle was the first Indian boarding school deliberately located far from the reservation, in an Eastern environment free of the West's anti-Indian prejudices and free from the influences of native cultures.
Captain Pratt, a career soldier and Indians' friend, believed given equal opportunities, Indians could become contributing members of American society. This goal of acculturation was to be accomplished by "total immersion" in the white man's world.
More than 8,000 students from virtually every tribe in the country came to Carlisle during its thirty-nine years of existence.
