1756 and 1758. Presumed first edition thus in two volumes. xi (apparently lacking an additional first title page with a note in Greek - the present remaining title page has the note in Latin), 336pp.; [viii], 336pp. The Scottish Enlightenment was a time for creating notable works of art, and, in Glasgow, the Foulis brothers Robert and Andrew promoted the arts and undertook some of the finest printing ever to have been produced in Scotland. They were famed for the accuracy of their printed editions of classical works. In 1756 they printed Homer's 'Iliad', followed by Homer's 'Odyssey' in 1758, as part of a classical series. James Moor, Professor of Greek at Glasgow University read the proof, and made corrections which were then implemented in subsequent versions. We believe these two volumes are the first editions, with Moor's corrections, and edited by Professors James Moor and George Muirhead at Glasgow University. The text is in Greek, and there is a Latin introduction by the editors in both volumes. The two volumes are uniformly bound in later (probably late 20th century) brown buckram covered boards with leather spines and gold titling on the spines. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards and slight fading to the spine of The Odyssey. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few light marks and the volumes have new endpapers from the time of the rebinding. There is some soiling on the title page and first few pages and last page in both volumes. The title page in the Iliad has 'B1' written on the top edge and a tear of about 1" on the fore edge, with a bookplate on the reverse. This has left offsetting on the dedication page which also has a tear of about 1/2" on fore edge. In the Odyssey the first title page (with Greek note) has 'B2' written on the top edge and a bookplate on the reverse with has left offsetting on the following title page. The top 1/2" of the spine gutter of the front endpapers and bottom 1" of the rear endpapers in the Iliad shows some damage and holes from old insect damage. In the Odyssey, the top 1" and bottom 1/2" of the rear endpapers show similar damage. PLEASE NOTE: These are heavy and scarce volumes and extra postage costs will apply. Seller Inventory # gVIClass13
