Ebd. - Karl Heitzmann (1836 - 1896) wurde nach dem Studium in Pest und Wien 1859 Assistent bei dem Chirurgen Franz Schuh, 1862 bei dem Dermatologen Ferdinand von Hebra und später bei dem Pathologen Salomon Stricker. Nach dem Tod von Anton Elfinger übernahm er die Illustrationen zu Hebras Atlas der Hautkrankheiten und schuf später zusammen mit seinem Bruder Julius den Atlas der descriptiven und topographischen Anatomie (2 Bde., 1870, (9)1902-05). 1873 habilitiert, wanderte er 1874 nach New York aus, wo er als Dermatologe arbeitete und ein Lehrinstitut für Mikroskopie gründete. 1883 veröffentlichte er dort das Werk "Microscopical morphology or the animal body in health and disease", in dem er seine Interzellulartheorie vertrat, derzufolge die Grundsubstanz die gleiche Funktion als Lebensträger hat wie das Protoplasma.
