About this Item
83pp. Original blindstamped cloth, gilt board title. Spine a bit sunned, corners bumped, a few small stains. Scattered foxing, or staining, else internally clean. Very good. These letters from a traveler in the American South originally appeared in a Toronto newspaper. In addition to the usual descriptions, the author was concerned with the supply routes and trade communication between the south-western United States (Chicago, St. Louis, the Mississippi, New Orleans, etc) and Canada. "The author entered the South via the Mississippi River, going southward from St. Louis and passing Memphis, Natchez, and New Orleans. He went to Mobile, Montgomery, Macon, Charleston, Wilmington (N.C.), Petersburg, and Richmond. New Orleans and Charleston were the only towns that made an impression on him.Interesting items pertaining to commerce, travel conditions, natural scenery, and morals and manners were included. The river boats made a deep impression on the author and he described them in detail" - Clark. CLARK OLD SOUTH 472. HOWES K164. SABIN 37886. LANDE 1264. TPL 8670. Seller Inventory # WRCAM25803
