About this Item
226 p. 19 cm. Frontispiece engraving and title page vignette. Half burgundy leather with marbled boards, endpapers and text block edge. Repaired spine head. Inscription on front endpaper. Some foxing and soiling to first and last pages and occasional spots to text. Sir Francis Bond Head (1793-1875) was Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada from 1835 to 1838, at the time of the Upper Canada Rebellion. His conduct was so erratic and irresponsible that he was removed from office; William Lyon Mackenzie called him "Sir Francis Bone Head." Don't let that prevent you from enjoying his work on horses, however, for Sir Francis knew a great deal more about them than he did about governing Upper Canada. He received the kinder nickname "Galloping Head" for his feat in riding twice across South America between Buenos Aires and the Andes. His text covers such topics as horsemanship, swimming a horse, use and abuse of spurs, how to dress for hunting, and whether hunting is cruel. Seller Inventory # 121604
