A rare edition of The Hoosier School Master a Novel with Twenty Nine Illustrations New and Revised Edition 1894 Printing. Edward Eggleston, author. Frank Beard, illustrator. Hardcover. New York: Orange Judd Company, 1894. Good Minus Condition: Book is intact but loose and shaken. Paper over hinges at endpapers front open with other loose hinge attachments throughout book. Front free endpaper lower corner end missing. Age toned paper. Pages unmarked with the following condition notes: bookmark creases, browning age spots, and some minor visible soil spots all show on pages. Green floral print endpapers. Forest green cloth boards with all corners soft and lightly bumped, some little spots of color loss, soil, minor edge cloth fraying. Front and back covers blind stamped, gilt printed on spine that is readable with visible color loss of end decorations and end letters. This 1894 revised edition illustrated by Frank Beard. Stories told from the perspective of Ralph Hartsook the School Master, location is Indiana. Edward Eggleston (1837-1902) was an American historian, novelist, and ordained Methodist minister. Too sick to attended school, he was educated at home. Eggleston wrote a number of tales, some of which, especially the Hoosier series, attracted much attention. Beard lectured at Chatauqua and taught at Syracuse University. He is the originator of the Chalk Talks, drawing crayon illustrations while giving talks.
