About this Item
A defective example of volumes II and III only, originally bound as one book (binding now split). Lacking volume I [Genesis through The Song of Solomon, and a few leaves as indicated below]. As with all recorded copies: no stated date of issue. In her highly informative 'John Henry White: The Unknown Printer', Marianne G. Morrow notes that White "had already printed some volumes of the Bible before leaving Halifax [1829] but it seems that the vast majority were printed in Charlottetown in the Wellington Hotel, where White had his stationary business and print shop. . The first advertisement for White's Bible appeared in the British American on November 10, 1832. It announced that the edition would be printed 'with ink and paper of the best quality and in a quarto shape decidedly the best size for family use.' Some choice was even given the subscribers: one could have the Bible with or without the Apocrypha, and if scarcity of money was a problem 'merchantable grain would be taken as payment'." This copy includes the Apocrypha but lacks engraved title, and was not bound with illustrations. Contemporary leather, with textblock split at the Family Record leaf following the Apocrypha; stains and toning throughout. The first few leaves of both volumes are detached. Volume II lacks engraved and ordinary title. The first two leaves of Isaiah are crudely sewn (in the wrong order) surprisingly to two detached leaves of Revelation. These four leaves are tattered along edges, with some loss to text of references at foot. The text of the Prophets and Apocrypha is complete: 3-277; 1-139. Closed tear to page 113 of the Prophets; pages 243-6 and 259-62 nearly detached, and chipped along fore-edge. The New Testament continues the pagination of the Prophets. Sewn together and loose from textblock: Family Record (one leaf printed recto and verso, with two entries: Alice Schurman d. 1838; Stephen Schurman d. 1851), title page, 281-88. These leaves chipped along edges with loss to a few words at fore-edge. NB: lacking pages 289-296 [Matthew VII 25 - XIII 8]. The leaf 297-8 is detached, chipped, and lacking header and a few words of reference at foot. 299-594 secure and complete, with 595-8 sewn at front with first two leaves of Isaiah (also in the wrong order). NB: lacking the final leaf of text: pages 599-600 (30 verses of Revelation]. A fair example only, lacking volume II titles, and five leaves of text, but a true rarity. The first (and illegal) printing of the Authorized Version in what is now Canada. Again M.G. Morrow: "There is no record of how many of White's Bibles were sold, but 350 volumes were advertized for sale at an auction after his death." Though Morrow suggests the vast majority were printed in Charlottetown, of the fewer than 10 copies on record only the copy at Acadia (and this one) bears the Charlottetown imprint.
