Gray cloth with gold stamping to spine. Jacket is grayish white with red lettering on front panel. Text has mild crimping to spine ends, else a clean, tight copy with no previous-owner markings. Jacket has a few very small closed tears to spine ends, tops of front and rear panels, else fine, with intact price on inside front flap. Cutting across the Bourbon Era, the Populist Revolt, and the Progressive Movement, Hoke Smith's career gave expression to the southern politics of his generation. A vital force in Georgia politics for almost 40 years, Smith (1855-1931) was a powerful politican, a brilliant lawyer, a successful newspaper publisher, and a leading educational reformer. He was a member of President Grover Cleveland's second cabinet, was twice governor of Georgia, and served for 10 years in the U. S. Senate. This study was part of LSU Press's renowned Southern Biography Series. 396 pages, index, footnotes, illustrated with B&W photographs.
