A vital force in Georgia politics for almost 40 years, Smith (1855-1931) was a powerful politican, a brilliant lawyer, a successful newspaper publisher, and a leading educational reformer. He was a member of President Grover Cleveland's second cabinet, was twice governor of Georgia, and served for 10 years in the U. S. Senate. This study was part of LSU Press's renowned Southern Biography Series. 396 pages, index, footnotes, illustrated with B&W photographs.
