Two volume set, complete, in a distinctive binding for Henry Arthur Johnstone, with gilt titles and gilt crossed swords crest to the front boards, with a laurel wreath to the spine compartments and the front board, spine ties visible to the top and bottom corners of the joints. Pig skin blind tooled end papers and gilt top edges. History of the Worthies was first published by Fuller in 1662; this edition lists the counties indicating their most worthy inhabitants, their topographical characteristics and commercial activities. Provenance: Henry Arthur Johnstone Library. Vol. I half title, xvi, 596pp; Vol. II half title, 619pp. Approximately 11 ¼ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition 5 plain raised bands, gilt title, author and year of publication to the second, fourth and sixth compartments, laurel wreath to the first, third and fifth compartments. Joints good condition. Corners good condition gently bumped and worn. Boards good condition with the typical cross swords pressed and Johnstone s initials to the front boards, date at the base, and tree laurel wreaths at the top, minor marks. Page edges good condition top edge gilt, slightly darkened, other gently tanned. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition intact and secure. Paste downs good condition pig skin paste downs with possible evidence of removal of a book plate to the front paste downs. End papers good condition blind stamped ex libris decoration for Henry Arthur Johnstone, subsequent end papers tanned. Title good condition half titles present in both volumes, title pages gently tanned with some offsetting from the frontispiece piece to Vol. II. Pages good condition gently tanned with minor foxing.
