About this Item
History of the Turnbull Family of Digby, Nova Scotia; by John F. Turnbull, The Book Society of Canada, Agincourt, ON, 1960. From the Preface this genealogy of the Turnbulls of Digby, Nova Scotia, has been prepared from information available in existing records and elsewhere. Data was collected from church records, headstones in cemeteries, family Bibles, interviews with many members of the Turnbull family and from voluminous correspondence. The arms of John Turnbull of Strickcathrow are those of a second son of a second son of a Turnbull of Bedrule, a branch of the family which occupies lands in Fife and Forfar counties during the 1600 s. the preface is signed by John F. Turnbull, Bramshott Farm. R. R, #3, Orillia, Ontario Canada, February 1960. From the text probably as a result of the famines of the 1780 s in Scotland, William Turnbull, together with his wife and three sons, decided to emigrate. In 1786, they took passage on the brig Lily to Halifax, arriving on 11th July, accompanied by Mrs. Turnbull s sister, Helen Brown. A fellow passenger was the Rev. James MacGregor, the first minister in Pictou County. William Turnbull and his family were the first settlers of Bay View, four miles from Digby, on the west side of Digby Gut, the narrows connecting the Bay of Fundy with Annapolis Basin. This family genealogy is very well laid out, featuring maps of the Turnbull clan in Scotland as well as in Nova Scotia. The family trees are laid out in fold-out sheets that provide the genealogy details of the Turnbull family in Nova Scotia. This thin, large format book, measuring 302mm X 225mm, is in fine condition in a good dust jacket, that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. Deckle edged pages. A high quality, but scarce Nova Scotian family history. Seller Inventory # 2168
