About this title

Book by Bartley, Numan V.

From Library Journal:

To the work of the leading historians of the South?e.g., Dewey Grantham, Edward L. Ayers?we may now add Bartley, the author of the first work to appear in the publisher's "History of the South" series since George B. Tindall's The Emergence of the New South, 1913-1945 was published in 1967. Bartley covers the period from the end of World War II to 1980. The 35 years includes not only obvious upheavals in race relations but also massive shifts in population, political power, and party alliances in a region previously noted for its slow rate of change. Bartley, primarily a political historian (Univ. of Georgia), seems uncomfortable explaining the important national role the South played in defining modern American culture, incorporating Elvis Presley and Strom Thurmond in the same region that produced the Civil Rights movement and Jimmy Carter. Nonetheless, his contribution is immense, and one hopes the series will now stay current, with new volumes replacing earlier, dated works.?Charles K. Piehl, Mankato State Univ., Minn.
