About this Item

Pp. xiv, 502. Title in red and black, numerous textual figures. Contemporary half calf over cloth boards, gilt spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, red stained edges. Binding a little rubbed at extremities, endpapers foxed, faint marginal browning to leaves, but overall a very good copy. The First Edition of one of the most popular books by the noted English antiquary, Thomas Wright, who helped found the British Archaeological Association, and was active in the Percy, Camden, and Shakespeare Societies. Besides the present work, he is chiefly remembered for his scholarly editions of medieval texts, including "Piers Ploughman" (1842), "The Chester Plays" (1843-47), Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" (1847-51), and Malory's "History of King Arthur" (1858). Size: Small Quarto. Bookseller Inventory # 21945
