((EXEMPLAIRE SANS CARTE REPLIABLE OU AUTRES)) FAILLON, ÉTIENNE-MICHEL, prêtre, sulpicien, professeur et historien, né à Tarascon, Bouches-du-Rhône, France, le 29 décembre 1799. Faillon, dont le nom n¿apparaît jamais sur la page de titre de ses volumes, a écrit plusieurs ouvrages historiques sur le Canada. L¿historien sulpicien fait trois voyages au Canada ; il y séjourne au total environ sept ans : d¿octobre 1849 à juin 1850, de mai 1854 à septembre 1855 et de novembre 1857 à juin 1862. Grâce à des séjours prolongés, l¿¿uvre canadienne de Faillon va atteindre des proportions exceptionnelles dépassant largement le domaine littéraire. La grande ¿uvre de Faillon demeure son Histoire de la colonie française en Canada qu¿il met définitivement en chantier lors de son second voyage. À cette fin, il consulte les archives des communautés de Montréal et de Québec et les greffes des notaires de ces deux villes. Il est assisté de plusieurs copistes qui transcrivent les documents sous ses ordres. En France, il complétera sa documentation aux archives de la Marine et du ministère des Affaires étrangères. Il visite aussi les grandes bibliothèques de Paris, parcourt les collections de Saint-Sulpice, de la préfecture de Versailles, de l¿archevêché et de la préfecture de Rouen, ainsi que les collections du British Museum de Londres. Il réunit ainsi en 30 volumes in-quarto une documentation devant servir à rédiger une histoire de la Nouvelle-France en quelque dix volumes. Ses réalisations furent plus modestes que ses ambitions : il ne put faire imprimer avant sa mort que les trois premiers volumes de son Histoire de la colonie française. Son Histoire de la colonie française débouche sur la réalité profane. Ayant été, à son époque, le seul historien au pays à recourir aux archives judiciaires, il n¿hésite pas à présenter certains aspects de la criminalité à Montréal. Quelques pages consacrées à la population et à la vie économique mettent en veilleuse les préoccupations moralisantes et la causalité surnaturelle. Ainsi, pour expliquer la faiblesse numérique de l¿immigration en Nouvelle-France, l¿historien mentionne la rigueur du climat, l¿absence de métaux précieux et la pauvreté du colon imputable au monopole du commerce du castor. Si les historiens canadiens se sont souvent scandalisés de ce dont les compagnies ne remplissaient pas leurs obligations de peuplement, Faillon constate, sans animosité, que les marchands trouvaient leur intérêt dans la colonie de comptoirs. Sur les modes de vie, Faillon se permet des observations qui ne manquent pas d¿intérêt. L¿histoire du travail, par contre, le ramène à des considérations morales. Les dirigeants comme les simples colons en Nouvelle-France mettaient la main à la pâte. L¿auteur y voit un indice d¿équilibre social, les élites n¿étant pas dispensées du travail manuel. Dans la colonie, la nécessité incite à la débrouillardise. Faillon y décèle l¿origine de l¿homme à tout faire canadien-français qu¿il observe au xixe siècle. Au niveau de la qualité de la main-d¿¿uvre, l¿historien risque de judicieuses observations ; il note que Montréal est mieux pourvu que Québec en ouvriers spécialisés. En somme, l¿histoire économique et sociale n¿est pas complètement ignorée par l¿historien sulpicien. Il est malheureux que les trois volumes parus s¿arrêtent aux années 1680, l¿auteur comptant poursuivre le récit jusqu¿en 1836. Bookseller Inventory #
