About this Item

" high Fidelity is the story of Rob, a pop music junkie who runs his own semi-failing record store." it is also my story in that at the same time, the early seventies, I owned a small chain of successful record stores in Michigan, not far from Chicago. The shop owner in the book, Rob had a couple of off-beat clerks Barry and Dick , who were forever analyzing and criticizing music they did not find to their liking. I have a brother named Jim who worked for me, who had a very eclectic sense of musical right and wrong. As in High Fidelity, Jim was not shy about telling my customers, to get a life and that their musical choices were for s.t, costing his beleaguered boss, which be me, customers and sales. The book rings so true it is almost scary. Book is in beautiful unmarked , as new condition, as is the unclipped ($21.95) jacket. Book is protected in Mylar. This is Hornby's first novel and perhaps his finest. The perfect collectible for Hornby and OCD music aficionados. Bookseller Inventory # 000887

About this title

Synopsis:

Praised by critics for its wit and contemporary edge, a novel by an up-and-coming English writer follows the love affairs and belated growing up a "Generation X" pop music fanatic and record store owner. First serial, Esquire.

Review:

It has been said often enough that baby boomers are a television generation, but the very funny novel High Fidelity reminds that in a way they are the record-album generation as well. This funny novel is obsessed with music; Hornby's narrator is an early-thirtysomething English guy who runs a London record store. He sells albums recorded the old-fashioned way--on vinyl--and is having a tough time making other transitions as well, specifically adulthood. The book is in one sense a love story, both sweet and interesting; most entertaining, though, are the hilarious arguments over arcane matters of pop music.
