About this Item
Hesychii Lexicon, cum notis doctorum virorum integris, ed. Johannes Alberti (Leiden, Samuel Luchtmans, printer to the University, 1746-1766). Large folio (430 x 270 mm), (10), xl, (76), (879); (4), xiii, (802), (44). Greek and Roman type, title page in red and black, full page engraving of Alberti in second volume. Contemporary Dutch velum, spine with raised bands in eight compartments, calligraphic titles in second and third compartments, boards double blind ruled into compartments with elaborate blind-tooled central medallions. Top front henges beginning to split but otherwise firm, vellum with minor soiling consistent with age. Internally bright, crips, and clean. A seminal edition of the famed Lexicon of Hesychius of Alexandria. Compiled in the 5th or 6th century AD, the lexicon, more than the title might suggest, is an invaluable resource for Greek literature and language. Compiled from multiple earlier sources, the lexicon provides numerous quotations from otherwise lost literary texts, numerous dialect glosses, and detailed historical information not contained anywhere else (such as the names of Athenian gene social groups). The Lexicon survives in a single, corrupt, and damaged manuscript copied in the 15th century and preserved in Venice. The editio princeps was printed by Aldus (edited by Marcus Mursurus) in 1514, and while several editions were published in the course of the 16th and 17th centuries (Thomas Badensis' at Hagenau in 1521; Schrevelius' at Leiden in 1668), Alberti's was the first since the editio princeps to make significant advances in the reading of the manuscript and the constitution of the text. While largely superseded by subsequent editions (particularly the multi-generational edition of Latte-Hansen-Cunningham), Alberti's edition is still of scholarly value for the copious notes to the text.
