This is unusually bound into a single Volume, Volume 1 [10] + xix + [6] + 160pp, Volume 2 [5] + unpaginated text pages to accompany the plates, and at end a 10pp list of cider apples + 16pp Index. 77 chromolithograph full page plates after drawings by Alice B Ellis and Edith E Bull. 4 plain plates illustrations in text, tissue guards, very slight darkening of margins of plates, few minor spots, The original front covers and title pages for parts 1-5 bound in at end [cover for part 1 is torn].Bound in half green calf/green paper covered boards by Harrison of Pall Mall, 2 red leather spine labels, gilt spine decoration. A few small white spots on rear cover, extremities lightly rubbed. Bookplate of Philip Baylis with his name embossed on the front cover, HC Dawkins, from his father also written on above bookplate. Bound in are various leaflets put out to advertise the book, and an interesting coloured insert printed by Kings Acre Nurseries relating to an apple sold by the 'The Largest in the World' and sold in 1910 for £14 !! Book Description Hereford and London. Jakeman and Carver. -1885, 1876. 2 volumes large quarto 15x12 inches, leather bound in a modern binding. Volume one, title page, (vi), xix, (2), 160, (5) pages and 4 uncoloured plates - volume two text bound unnumbered as descriptive letterpress for each plate, original titles to five parts bound in (one loose), and 77 FINE COLOURED CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS OF APPLES AND PEARS, COMPLETE. Minor marks to only one plate and some marginal repair to the occasional text margin, otherwise a good clean copy in a recent binding. Plates lithographed by G. Severeyns the reknown Belgium chromolithographer. A both decorative and informative work. The work was initiated by the Woolhope Naturalists Field Club in order to - restore Herefordshire to its fruit growing supremacy. The plates are after drawing by Edith E. Bull and Alice B. Ellis.
