Book Description Moseley: Delos Press, 1990. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Cloth-backed marbled boards. Edition limited to 226 numbered copies, handsomely printed by Jonathan Stephenson at the Rocket Press, of which this is one of 50 in half-cloth numbered and signed by the author; there were also 26, lettered and signed, in goatskin. "My own publishing of Durrell," writes Peter Baldwin ("'Conon's Songs from Exile': the limited edition publications of Lawrence Durrell", The Private Library, Winter 1990), "was an extension of collecting his work for what was then twelve years." Apart from An Irish Faustus, "The other Durrell title which I published," continues Baldwin, "has its own interesting history. Robin Waterfield of Oxford introduced me via some translations to the fascinating work of Henri Michaux. I asked Durrell if he would do me a piece on Michaux, but he declined. The venture might have ended there if I had not taken the trouble to view the Durrell archive on sale at Sotheby's, London, in the summer of 1978 (. . . subsequently sold by private treaty to the University of Southern Illinois . . .). The archive contained a lot of working papers from the 1970s, including, to my surprise, a longish unpublished essay on Michaux." Durrell rewrote the essay, and furthermore supplied an English translation of his unrecorded poem "Ah Michaux, Quel Sacré Diable Vous Faîtes" published in French in Le Figaro in 1967. "The design by Stephenson," writes Baldwin, "is quite exemplary.". Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # T100183
