About this Item
[a good sound copy, faint tea-stain to bottom of text block, very slight bumping to upper front corner, vintage bookseller's label (Vroman's, Pasadena) at top left corner of front endpaper, one-time owner's address label and inked year of purchase on half-title page, same person's name written on title page; the jacket shows some edgewear and slight dog-earing along top and bottom edges, short closed tear at the upper front flap-fold]. (B&W photographic plates) A "complete and unabridged reprint" -- the first such, I believe -- of the original (1898) edition of this history of the Hawaiian Kingdom, by its last monarch, who ruled for a little less than two years before she was deposed and the monarchy was overthrown in 1893. It's "essentially a plea for the preservation of her kingdom [and] also a portrayal of the life and customs of 19th-century Hawaii -- and, incidentally, of the United States and Europe -- seen through the shrewd and observant eyes of an internationally famous person who was basically a sympathetic and understanding woman." The Queen was forced to abdicate in 1895 and placed under house arrest for a time; she later sued the United States (unsuccessfully) several times in an attempt to recover lands seized during the coup d'etat and the subsequent annexation of Hawaii by the U.S. (It's more than a bit ironic that this book remained out of print during the entire period when Hawaii was a U.S. Territory, prior to becoming the country's 50th state in 1959.) ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.****.
