Description:

FIRST EDITION, one of 1000 copies, of arguably Hirschfeld's greatest work. Complete with 24 beautiful mounted lithographs. "Just before Hirschfeld died in 2003, he wrote, 'I have lived almost my whole life on the outskirts of Harlem? Harlem was as familiar and as accessible to me as the blocks around your house are to you, or the fields around your homestead, or the ice floes around your igloo.' He was justifiably proud of his Harlem series and had the entire set of twenty-four lithographs framed on the hallway leading to his studio" (The Hirschfeld Century). Text by William Saroyan. New York: Hyperion, 1941. Tall folio (approx. 14.5 x 18 in.), original pictorial (hand-colored) cloth. Without the rare original slipcase. A little soiling to cloth; plates generally very clean with paste action (as always) and a few occasional spots of foxing. An unusually well-preserved copy of a work that is extremely difficult to find in collectible condition. Bookseller Inventory #
