During World War II, it was impossible to import English and American books into Sweden - in fact, no books written in English at all. The Swedish company, Continental Book Company, established in 1942, created Zephyr Books, a paperback series , to fill the void. The series continued after the war, but only for a short while, the last Zephyr Book being issued in 1950. About 110 titles in all were issued. Zephyr Books were handsome paperbacks, complete with color-coded dust-jackets (dark blue for British titles, red for American, green for classics . etc. They were not meant to be introduced on either the American or English market, and thus are not seen that often here. Presented here is "The Happy Return" by C. S. Forester. It is the first volume of the Horatio Hornblower novels. The Hornblower series is, of course, one of the best-known, and most popular naval series published in English. "The Happy Return" was the 29th book published by Zephyr Books. . PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Trade paperback; 287 pages; approximately 4 5/8" x 7 1/8" ; decorated cream wraps, glued with printed dust-jacket. ************ CONDITION - VERY GOOD - - A CLEAN, ATTRACTIVE SPECIMEN WITH THE FOLLOWING NOTED : EXTERIOR : Modest surface rub and a bit of toning - slight chipping along edges - there is a closed tear to the head of the rear panel that extends onto the spine - this has been obviously, but neatly mended HINGES / BINDING : Likely fragile - there is evidence of minor mending to cover attachment - no leaves are detached or loose, but the text block in general seems a bit shaken INTERIOR : Clean and presentable throughout with negligible signs of use DUST JACKET : GOOD PLUS - - Chipping and small loss along edges - most noticeable at spine panel extremities - the tear to the cover is present on the jacket, but remains unmended on the jacket - modest surface rub and a bit of small spotting - looks fairly decent under protective mylar cover.
