Quarto. in sheets. Contained in blue cloth folding chemise with blue full morocco Solander case lettered in gilt, by Riviere. The first appearance of this drama. This is a Stevenson item of the very greatest rarity, as only a very fewÑno fewer than six, no more than twelveÑcopies are believed to be in existence. The above comprises 68 leaves with the text appearing on the rectos only, in trial proof fashion. Stevenson, when living at Bournemouth, turned his hand to playwriting. This production was the joint literary effort of his wife and himself. It is, of course, difficult to affix the respective authorships to any particular part. Upon its completion, Stevenson viewed the manuscript with more or less disfavor. Mrs. Stevenson, however, liked it enough to select the text from which the play was reprinted in 1914. This was printed in London by Thomas J. Wise, for private circulation only, limited to but 30 copies. Mr. Edmund Gosse wrote the introduction. It is of the keenest interest to compare the variances between this text and that of the 1914 edition. [Beinecke 571]. Bookseller Inventory #
