About this Item
64pp. Original printed green wrappers. Wrappers faded and starting to detach from text block, upper right corner of front wrapper and lower right corner of rear wrapper chipped. Internally quite clean. Very good overall. Signed by Oglesby on the titlepage. Rare survival of an account of the Dieppe Raid by an American fighting with the Canadian Army in World War II. Everett Oglesby (1909-79) heard about Hitler's attack on Poland in 1939 and was determined to enter the fight, even if the United States was not. The next year he made his way to Windsor, Canada, enlisted in the army, and was assigned to the Essex Scottish Regiment. The Essex Scottish was one of the first Canadian units to see combat in World War II, when they were mobilized in 1942 for Operation Jubilee, better known as the Dieppe Raid, an attack on the German- occupied port in France. This was a largely Canadian force, following pressure from the Canadian government that its troops have an opportunity to see action. The operation was a disaster: 3,623 of the 6,086 men who made it ashore were killed, wounded, or captured. Oglesby was hit by shrapnel and lost a lung, his heart saved from another piece of shrapnel by his wallet and paybook. He was then captured by German forces and held as a POW for over a year. His account was written with Menno Duerksen (1917-2005), a journalist who worked in Europe at the end of the war and covered the Nuremberg Trials. This is the first time we have handled this title. We found only one copy in OCLC, held by the University of Arkansas, and we could not find records of any copies having appeared at auction. OCLC 38111496. "Mother Awaits Return of Son" in BLYTHEVILLE COURIER NEWS, Oct. 29, 1943. "Hero of Dieppe Classified 1-A" in BLYTHEVILLE COURIER NEWS, June 13, 1944. Seller Inventory # WRCAM55086
