About this Item
Original grey boards with darkish blue/green cloth sp., good printed label to top, as clean and unworn as could be reasonably expected given its nature. Unfortunately completely unpaginated; uncut fore-edge and bottom, flier for 'A new and improved edition of the English Housekeepr, by Anne Cobbett; a few scattered tanning spots and many outer edges to varying degrees, fr. end-paper tanned around flier, end gutter has small horizontal tears but quite secure and no sign of opening. This volume contains a very lengthy and detailed list of all the properties seized by Henry VIII and Edward VI and to whom they were given, county by county from Bedfordshire to Yorkshire, Anglesey to Radnor, The Isle of Man and Antrim to Wicklow. These vary in the amount of information provided. Cobbett's thesis, as expounded in Volume I is that the entire episode was a massive plundering exercise to the detriment of the well-being of ordinary people, not that Cobbett was a Catholic of course ! The first volume published 1824, full sets rare and this volume seems scarcer than the first (which was re-issued in 1825 and 1826). 17 cm x 26 cm. Seller Inventory # 013671
