Bound in 18th century calf over boards, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. pp. [2 (blank)] [24] 1-898 [24] [76]. Title page in red and black. Illustrated with an engraved title vignette (a winged horse); woodcut initials, headpieces and tailpieces. Text in Greek and Latin in parallel columns, with supplementary matter in Latin. From the library of John McVickar, a prominent professor of Philosophy, Rhetoric, Belles-lettres, and Political Economy at Columbia College in New York. Signed: "John M'Vickar, Col. Coll., 1822," on the title page; with a printed bookplate (dated 1868) on the front pastedown. The calf binding is worn with the front board detached, else internally very good with light scattered foxing to the outer margins. Still considered by scholars to be the best edition of Pausanias' famous *Description of Greece*. A Greek traveler and geographer of the 2nd century, Pausanias provides contemporary descriptions of temples and shrines in the Peloponnese and central Greece, interspersed with frequent discussions of local myths and cult practices.
