About this Item
This 6.0 x 8.75 inch, 432 page hardcover book is the stated first edition of this title in 1947 with that statement on the copyright page. This book is in very good condition with some time-wear showing to the dark green cloth covers with gilt lettering and design on front panel and spine. The two bottom corners show a modest bump and the spine extremities show crinkling - - but overall the covers are tight and very good - - and the binding is square and tight. The front and back endpapers are different tom each other - - showing a map of the Salt Lake region and then the rear endpaper showing western trails and explorations - - 1776-1840. This title is an early one for author Dale Morgan and he would go on to be one of the very best researchers, scholars, and writers on the American West. This title was part of the American Lakes series. The text is in fine condition with the pages showing no markings or damage and with the black-and-white photos clean. Morgan surveys the full spectrum of human experience in the region touching on early native peoples, the era of the mountain men, the development of the Oregon Trail, the Mormon story and their development of new communities in Utah, government surveys, the Salt Lake itself, and much more. 432 pages.
