About this Item
"There is no doubt that the increase of trade caused by the West Australian mines has been of benefit to South Australia, and this is one reason why I am strongly in favor of a federation, and then there would be less difficulty. . Intercolonial free trade we must have; in fact I would be glad to see all Custom Houses done away with. One system of government, one currency, and one postage, and as to the Governors, one would do. . Hardly a man in our Parliaments [is] fitted for statesmanship by either birth or education". (p19). A pamphlet (also titled 'Mineral Theories') with the author's commentary on a variety of mining and political topics, including: 'The history and practice of mining in the British Isles'; 'Prof. Ansted's Lectures on Mining'; 'Gold in the Sea'; 'The Growth of Gold'; 'The Distribution of Gold'; 'The Occurrence of Gold'; 'Andrew Crosse's Experiment'; and 'Origin of Gold'. In the last essay, Marshall includes descriptions of various large Australian nuggets, gold and quartz, theories that gold will be found "chiefly connected with iron ores" in West Australia, harsh criticism of the Schools of Mines ("almost useless"), and a desire for more resources for investigating South Australian gold districts. Henry Marshall (1822 - 1903) moved to South Australia in 1843, briefly participated in the Victorian gold rush, and returned to Angaston, where he was known as a collector of mineral specimens. According to his obituary, "Mr. Marshall was very original and decided in his opinions on most questions, and visitors to the town generally made a point of calling upon him during their stay. In the early days he occupied the position of inspector of' nuisances in Adelaide". (Advertiser, Thursday 22 January 1903). 8vo, 19 pp. Printed tan wrappers, title in black at front wrapper. A light circular mark at front wrapper which penetrates through to early pages, not affecting legibility. Libraries Australia ID 9541910. Ferguson 12281. OCLC: 166308501. Ferguson 12218 variant wrapper. Seller Inventory # 21468
