Description:

A Fine copy of the rare first edition, first printing of this important work, bound in brown quarter-leather and marbled boards, with the buttressed spine lettered and decorated in gilt, the endpapers elegantly marbled, and with matching marbling to the closed edges of the massive page block (rubbing to the corners and a small rub to the top of each board); 2,157 numbered pages with the words treated being given in German and the treatments thereof in Latin and in German; a wonderful ASSOCIATION COPY, having BELONGED TO MURRAY GELL-MAN AND PAUL VON HEYSE, each a winner of the Nobel Prize, and being SIGNED BY HEYSE "Dr. Paul Heyse" on the front free endpaper. When published, this important work was the most complete dictionary of Middle High German. Heyse's father, Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Heyse, was an important professor of classical philology and his son, Paul Johann Ludwig von Heyse himself studied classical philology before embarking on a writing career, a career so successful that he won the 1910 Nobel Prize in Literature "as a tribute to the consummate artistry, permeated with idealism, which he has demonstrated during his long productive career as a lyric poet, dramatist, novelist and writer of world-renowned short stories." This work would have been highly useful to Paul von Heyse in his translation work and for his study of literature. Following Heyse's ownership, the book belonged to Murray Gell-Mann -- winner of the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles and for his discovery of the quark -- whose bookplate resides on the front free endpaper. A notable tome which appears rather infrequently, only four copies of it have been offered at auction in the last 30 years. A fabulous ASSOCIATION COPY of this scarce work, having been OWNED BY TWO NOBEL PRIZE WINNERS. [Please Note: Shipping charges to Buyer will exceed the amount quoted by this site.].
