Synopsis: Book by Esher, Lionel

From Library Journal: Green presents 80 examples of English country houses ranging from the 16th century to the 1930s. The result is basically a tour book of lovely, well-preserved houses that have retained their original settings and appearance, with emphasis on the smaller country house. The beautifully colored exterior shots provided by Sykes, well known for his photography of old English houses, are accompanied by interesting commentary on the former residents and brief descriptions of the homes. This book is easy to pick up and provides enjoyable browsing. Of interest to the average layperson. The Glory of the English House examines the picturesque houses of England, beginning with thatch- and stone-roofed structures of the 14th century. In this book, Esher describes the changes in architectural style and the reasons behind them while probing the history of the area and its occupants. The appealing full-page color photographs capture the exterior grandeur of these homes and their picturesque grounds. This book is sectioned by architectural style such as Tudor Renaissance, Gothic, and Old English. It deals with the "grand" houses of England, whereas Green's book illustrates smaller, more liveable houses. Esher's book is also more detailed than Green's. Of interest to a larger library with a collection on English architecture, history, or lifestyle.
