About this title:

Synopsis: Italian photographer Giuliano Plorutti’s Circus sets aside the familiar sights of the show ring in order to portray the everyday life of circus performers; he is, as it were, more interested in the afternoon’s practice than the evening’s performance. He also favors the humbler circus groups to the large-scale companies, those that offer simple combinations of music, theater and dance. These unobtrusive black-and-white photographs depict performers of all kinds--jugglers, musicians, snake charmers, trapeze artists, tightrope walkers, clowns--posing informally for the camera, in the midst of limbering up in private or in the ring, playing music together or alone, relaxing in their caravans with their families or in more straightforward portraits facing the camera. The pictures were taken mostly from 2000 to 2009 (with a few pictures taken in the early 1990s) in Italy, France, Hungary and Czechoslovakia, and vividly convey the realities of a nomadic lifestyle.

About the Author: Giuliano Plorutti was born in Italy. His passion for photography started, at a very early age, immortalising intensely emotional moments which, in turn, led him to Paris with his first photographs. His professional journey has always mirrored his inner complexity, a constant, ongoing introspective drive to capture an instant, to preserve the soul in its purest form of expression, devoid of any superfluity. One of his most significant projects started with Gitanes which became the first part of the Trilogia Errante. His work has been exhibited in a number of galleries including "Angels" at the Christine Rose Gallery in New York, Palazzo della Permanente in Milan and the Pieterburen Gallery in Holland. His trilogy project continued with Circus, forming the second part, and will be completed with the publication of Luna Park which he is currently working on. With Circus Giuliano also approached filmmaking, directing the 4-minute short Circus. He also collaborates with well-known advertising agencies and publishing companies and continues his work as director for fashion and advertising projects.

Book Description Damiani. Hardback. Book Condition: new. BRAND NEW, Circus, Giuliano Plorutti, Giuliano Plorutti is fascinated by travelling performers, by their way of life, their affinity with seasons and their nomadic lifestyle. As a photographer he prefers street performances to those of the established circus families. He likes the idea of a simple circus, made up of a combination of theatre, music and dance; that sequence of skills that has revolutionized the fundamental idea of the circus, replacing exotic wild animals, sequins and spotlights with performers who blend in with their audiences. The fine line that separates the performer from the audience becomes thinner, as does the boundary separating the photographer from the photographed. Plorutti has assimilated this approach and doesn't position himself and his camera arrogantly in front of his subject like an artist who must take home his own idea of the world. Quite the contrary, his presence becomes invisible, he relates with people stripped of the role he has assumed at that moment. The photograph itself seems almost secondary, it is the people who come first. Plorutti expects nothing of them, he makes no demands that could condition the pose, nothing is constructed. His photographs freeze a moment in the normal flow of circus life, owed to the trust that he earns for himself each and every time. This is the only way that the act of taking a photograph loses its invasiveness and becomes testament of a true relationship. Bookseller Inventory # B9788862083249
