The folder has a brown leather covered backstrip with illustration printed in black and stamped gilt titles. The boards are covered with brown paper and the joints are fabric reinforced. This is number 365 of a limited edition of 750 copies. Paper used is Maillol-Gonin hand made hemp-paper. Maillol had been thinking of illustrating Virgil since 1908 and as late as in 1937 Gonin did encourage him again to restart the project. He finished the last woodcut a few days before he died in September 1944. It took Gonin another 6 years to publish the 2nd volume. Text in Latin and French. Although originally intended as a joint project with Count Kessler, who died in 1937, it was published posthumously by Gonin, the publisher of most of Maillol's books. A beautiful set printed in a new font created from a 15th century type. A watermark in the paper shows a sitting nude with the names of Maillol and Gonin behind it.
