First separate and only 19th C edition. 'After Dickens's return from America in 1868, his friend James T. Fields (of the publishing firm Ticknor & Fields, Boston, USA) persuaded him to prepare a story for the Atlantic Monthly, for which the substantial sum of £1,000 was paid. It appeared in The Atlantic Monthly in Jan. to March 1868 and reprinted in All The Year Round Feb. 1868. The little story has also been issued in pamphlet form, square 12mo, pp.53, pink wrappers, undated'- Kitton. Stapled pamphlet. 12mo. [2],[i-iii],4-53,[1]p. Publisher's pink wrappers in quite excellent condition, the front wrapper slighty dusty, otherwise VG. Internally fine. [Eckel 200; Gimbel B299; Kitton 92; VanderPoel B585]. Seller Inventory # 10209
