Blue w/brown lettering, bear vignette. Ex-lib w/pocket on rear endpaper, several small stamps, discard, etc. Tape ghosts to boards. Text shows the occasional thumb smudge, but is overall clean and bright, lightly tanned. Nice illustrations by John Schoenherr. Front flap on DJ has been removed, and the blurb pasted to the front endpaper, but they left the rear blurb intact on the jacket. Jacket also shows shelfwear, loss to head of spine, skinned spot near heel of spine on front board, and former price label to front cover. Dutton Lifetime Library Binding. "Mark Andersen's only frined was Ben, the Alaskan brown bear that Fog Benson kept chained in the dark rickety shed on Mark's route between home and school. Mark shared his leftover sandwiches with the big bear and sometimes even unchained him so they could sit together in the doorway and enjoy the bright sunshine. When Mark was told that Fog Benson wanted to get rid of the bear, and he could not persuade his father to buy him, to save his life, Mark led Ben, like a boy with his dog, up over the Alaskan tundra to where he could escape to the distant white mountains." (from the jacket). Bookseller Inventory # 1212150C
