About this title

Synopsis:

350 full-color photographs vividly portray the rich and varied tradition of Georgia gardening. Commissioned by The Garden Club of Georgia to commemorate its sixtieth anniversary and to celebrate the heritage and beauty of Georgia gardens.

Review:

Commissioned by the Garden Club of Georgia to commemorate its sixtieth anniversary, Gardens of Georgia is an exquisite presentation. Lavishly illustrated with color photography by Richard Moore, the book is both an historical record of Georgia gardens and an art work in itself. Moore's photographs have a rich shade about diem. They invite you in as a cool place out of the hot Georgia sun. Even the close-ups manage to retain that sense of shadowy mystery while still recording plantings with sufficient detail. William Mitchell's text is filled with historical gardening information as well as details of geography and climate that gardeners want to know. The great old plantation gardens are amply illustrated, but there are also urban and suburban gardens, public as well as private-159 in all. The text is organized into four geographic areas: Savannah and the coast, the Piedmont Plateau, South Georgia and Atlanta, and North Georgia. The historical documentation and description of each section is interesting reading in itself, and each garden is firmly set in its historical context. A bibliography fully documents the historical quotations used throughout the book. Quotations from the gardener also appear within the text. Special gardens include Jinuny and Rosalind Carter's private space in Plains in the South Georgia region. In the Coastal region in historic Savannah, there are the public gardens at the William Scarbrough House built in 1819 and faithfully restored by the Trustees' Garden Club. Of special interest to those who like nothing better than to take a break from their own gardens to visit other gardens is an index by region. I would not plan a vacation to Georgia without consulting this book. Highly reconimended. for libraries. All proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to establish garden projects throughout the state. Special limited editions with a slipcase are available from the publishers for $100. -- From Independent Publisher
